Killing Mr. Griffin 2

Mark definitley has power over other people. Why is that? How much of his power is fear? What are the others afraid of?

What makes some people seem so powerful? What makes others want to follow them?

  1. Mark is one of those people that always know the right things to do and say. He is smooth talking and confident in what says which makes other people to be confident and believe pretty much everything he says.

  2. Because, he just does. He has so much of a rep. that the others fear they can either make or break them I suppose you can say.

Reputation in school. If they are like the "power house" of the school, many want to be friends for the simple reason that if they are, they have a chance at avoiding conflict.

  3. I believe a small part (maybe 30% or so?) of Mark's power over others is simply fear.

When he's trying to convince Jeff to join in the plan in Chapter 2, Jeff doesn't really want to do it but he remembers how scary Mark was in elementary school, and how manipulative and scary he was when he set fire to the cat with no remorse or guilt.

The rest of Mark's control is his charisma. He knows things, things the others don't, and he can always think through situations to find the best way to do things.

When Mr. Griffin is found to be dead, the first thing David thinks is, "We've got to get Mark! He'll know what to do!" Later, when Susan is called to the office, she's waiting for Mark to see what she has to do, because she knows he'll know what to do and how to do it.

It's the exact reason why Mark is unofficially the group's leader.

  4. Mark has power over over people because he is a manipulator and he can find your weak spot or your most desire and can use that to benefit him. Most of his power is because people are afraid of him or what he will do. Mark can get people to follow him because he can make them feel good about themselves or what they do.

  5. I think some of it is fear, people seem afraid of him. He's also so calm and confident. He analyzes everything and always seem to know what is going on. People listen to him because he can make anything sound like it makes sense.

  7. Mark has power over other people because he knows how people work. He watches them and their mannerisms until he comes to understand things about them that others wouldn't necessarily pick up on. He always knows just the right things to say to make someone listen to him. People fear him because maybe they're afraid of what he'll do or say since he seems to know so much. He's very convincing in the things he says and he's very confident.

People seem powerful because of reputations they've created for themselves of because of their parents or siblings. Certain people know how to get into the "in crowd" and how to work people. Others follow them because they want to be popular or because they're afraid of what may happen to them if they don't.

  8. Mark is very in-tune with the inner workings of people. He is very manipulative, he knows what to do in say around people to make them do what he says. It's said that he watches people during class, and he keeps mostly silent and reserved. He learns about his peers by watching them, observing them, finding out what drives them and makes them tick. By watching them, he sees what makes them afraid, and definitely uses his knowledge to his advantage.

People can seem powerful by being confident, assertive, or by projecting an air of superiority or intelligence. People that are passive or have lower self-esteem will generally follow people that exude power.

  9. Mark causes fear in people not only because he seems to know so much about their soft spots, but also because I believe he makes people feel their relationship with him is in jeopardy if they refuse him something. He makes himself seem like to only one with the answers to a problem and that has everything under control. So if these people think that if he won't be associated with them anymore, they feel like they're losing a true leader.

People seem so powerful because they can hit people where it hurts; they observe their weak points and target them, like when Mark asked David when was the last time he did something crazy. Mark knew about his want for something different in his life. Powerful people have a charismatic personality that they sometimes use for bad causes.

  10. I think most of Marks power is from fear. He has no guilt over the things he dose, for example the cat he set on fire, he didn't feel a since that it was wrong or that he shouldn't do it. So if he could do that without a second thought whats to stop him from doing something to the others. I believe the fact that mark is so calm, confident, or just doesn't care about the things he dose is what gives him power over the others. Because he doesn't have guilt about what he dose, he thinks differently than the others, he knows how to get out of a situation, thats why they follow him.

  11. The reason why Mark has so much power over people is because he pays really close attention to how people work and what their strengths and weaknesses are.I think some of it is fear from others because they know what things Mark has done in the past crazy things and they want to go with him so he won't hate them like he does Mr. Griffin. Some people are very powerful because they are outgoing or independent. Most people that are outgoing are leaders to the ones that are shy and if your independent your more than likely going to be the leader and have power of any group your with.

  12. To answer the second part of the question (which I forgot to answer earlier), it seems like, at least here in Reidland, the power of a person is directly linked with their popularity. Popular people can influence others simply because they're popular and others aren't. Many people try to "fit in with the cool kids" and don't want to do anything that wold cause the "cool kids" to not like them.

  13. mark is one that knows right from wrong and he tries to fit in. he has no fear he has most power over people. they are afraid that mark will make them feel bad bout themselves and not be in the crowd with everyone else.

i thank carsma and people would follow them cause they have a good personality and light up everyones day and just make people happy to be around them

  14. Yes Mark definitely has power over others. I think that is because his personality and that he can know just what to say to the right person and that they can become "brainwashed" to him and they will go along with anything that he says. I also think that some of it is fear because people want to be his friend because they are scared of what he might do to them if they tell him no or don't go along with what he says. Others are afraid of what he is capable of because he is expressionless and has a twisted mind on things but only his friends know what he can do and it must be a mystery to the others and that is what scares them the most.

People can seem powerful by there personality because some people carry themselves that way and others won't want to mess with them or pick on them in fear of being hurt by that person. I also think that people want to follow them to make them seem tough when really their not and they don't want to be messed with and they can stay on that persons good side so that they don't get picked on and if they are friends with that person then they may have a better chance to change what they did wrong to that person and not get hurt.

  15. Yes mark totally has a sense of power over others because he has such a strong personality and he is to what it seems to always be right about everything. But to me i think that confidence is driven by fear.

  16. Ok 3rd time trying to type this thingg..Well control like that is stupidd.. you have to be a huge PUSHOVERR to be pushed around like he does..he fears that he might get in trouble..because he dont want to fail school...

  17. He has power because no one will stand up to him they are all afraid of him. I think that he doesn't have much fear about anything anymore so he decides to make people fear him by telling them what he could do to them if they didn't do what he said. I think that what makes people seem so powerful is that they act like they are big and can hurt anyone and not care about it, hurt others or talk about hurting someone else and seem like they mean it and/or have done it. People follow them cause they are afraid of what they could or would do to them.

  18. Mark has the power because he has controlled others before it seems like. The others are afraid of Mark probably because he seems violent and strange. Someone that seems powerful is someone that knows what to do when they are in a tough situation. Others want to follow that person because they know that person will always have their back.

  19. mark has power over the others not because he is their friend but they are more afraid of him because he is weird and crazy. someone with power can stand up for themselves and people follow them because if they ever needed them they would be there
